the celebrated 18th century Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni and
translated by Tunc Yalman, The Liar is a romantic farce
involving Lelio, whose problem is that he is unable to speak the truth
when a whopping lie suits his purposes better. Before long he has
thrown the budding romances of two lovely young sisters into turmoil
and created such a tangle of fabrications and misunderstandings that it
appears doubtful that things can ever be set straight. Will truth
ultimately triumph? The play was
staged with the comical elements of 18th century Italian commedia dell'
arte. The improvised comedies of that area of theatre were performed by
traveling groups of players on makeshift stages, with the performers
adhering to a standard array of characters and agreeing on a basic plot
prior to each performance. Photos courtesy of Brad Winkler, Acacia Theatre. -
