Captain Spock has been acting as a Federation Special Envoy. ("Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country")
Klingon
Changelor Gorkon offers peace to the Federation. He wishes to end all
Klingon-Federation hostilities, and dismantle all bases in and around
the Neutral Zone. Starfleet orders the USS Enterprise-A (still
commanded by Captain Joel Randolph) to transport Captain Spock and
Admiral Kirk to welcome Chancellor Gorkon. Their orders are to escort the Chancellor and his aides
to a peace conference on Earth.
During the escort mission, however, the USS Enterprise-A appears to fire two torpedoes at Chancellor Gorkon's ship, Kronos One.
Two unidentified Starfleet officers beam onto the crippled Klingon ship
and begin shooting every Klingon they see -- including Chancellor
Gorkon (who dies shortly thereafter). Admiral Kirk and Captain Spock,
the senior-most Starfleet officers present, are arrested by the
Klingons and charged with murder.
Gorkon's daughter, Azetbur, becomes the new Chancellor of the Klingon Empire.
Kirk
and Spock stand trial on the Klingon homeworld, and are found guilty of
murder, although
their execution is commuted, they are sentenced to live out the
rest of their lives on the frozen Klingon penal planet, Rura Penthe.
Ultimately, however, they are safely rescued by Captain Randolph and
the USS Enterprise-A.
Later,
after the rescue, Enterprise Vulcan helmsman, Lieutenant Valeris, is
discovered to be the individual who murdered Chancellor Gorkon. A forced
Vulcan mindmeld reveals that Starfleet Admiral Cartwright and Klingon
General Chang are among the conspirators who plotted to kill Gorkon,
frame the Federation, and disrupt Federation-Klingon peace talks.
At
the peace conference on Khitomer, an assassination attempt on the life
of the UFP President is thwarted, and the conspirators are publicly
revealed. In orbit, the USS Enterprise-A and USS Excelsior destroy
Klingon General Chang's ship. With the conspiracy foiled,
Federation-Klingon peace efforts can continue.
Curzon Dax is one of the Federation diplomats present who negotiates
the resulting Khitomer Accords. This historical treaty paves the way for nearly
100 years of peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. ("Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country" --

the the Nexus when it passes near Earth (three light years away).
During
the course of this rescue, Admiral James T. Kirk (who had been a guest
onboard) is presumed killed -- although he is later found to be alive
within the Nexus. Guinan and Dr. Tolian Soren are among those rescued
from one of the transport ships. ("Star Trek:
